Don Estridge was an American computer engineer who is best known for leading the team at IBM that developed the IBM Personal Computer (PC), one of the first successful mass-produced personal computers.
Estridge was born in August 1937 and grew up in Conway, Arkansas. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Arkansas and later earned a master's degree in mathematics from North Carolina State University.
In the early 1980s, Estridge was tasked with leading a team at IBM to create a personal computer that could compete with other emerging products in the market. The result was the IBM PC, which was introduced in 1981 and became a huge success, setting the standard for personal computing for years to come.
Tragically, Don Estridge died in a plane crash in August 1985, along with his wife and daughter. He was posthumously inducted into the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the development of the personal computer.
